Made from the seeds of the achiote tree, which grows in tropical regions in South and Central America.
One of the world’s most widely used natural food colorings. Its subtle flavor makes it a wonderful way to brighten up a dish without overpowering other flavors. And unlike many non-natural food colorings has been linked to a variety of health benefits including reduced inflammation, improved eye and heart health, and anticancer
properties. It has been used as face and body pain for centuries by Costa Rican indigenous peoples and others throughout central and south America and around the world and is often used as a red bindi by married women in India.
It’s a wonderful alternative to saffron in rice dishes, with chicken, or in stews.
