Aji Charapita Chilis
(Capsicum chinense)
Charapita Chilies are hard to not describe as “cute”. Their pea-sized, round, yellow-orange and bright red colors are adorable until you realize they are also known for their intensity and fruity, citrus-like flavor. Charapita Chilies are thought of as one of the most expensive and rarest chili peppers in the world. They are considered a prized ingredient in traditional Peruvian cuisine, like ceviche, sauces, stews, and many traditional fish dishes.
This illusive and peculiarly tiny pepper has a fundamental role in Amazonian cooking, particularly in the province of Coronell Portillo, as it is the basic ingredient of many traditional dishes. It’s often used fresh, fermented, dried and preserved under oil or vinegar.
Like most chili peppers they offer many nutritional benefits. They are high in vitamin C, A, antioxidants and capsicum. The presence of capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers their heat, provides pain-relieving properties. Capsaicin can help alleviate arthritis and nerve pain, by interacting with pain receptors and may boost metabolism.
